St Michaels Church
(Willington)

St Michael's Church is pretty, with a modest west tower complete with quoins, and a Norman tympanium over its south door. It was heavily restored in the early part of the 19th century, when a north transept was added. It contains a richly decorative 18th century font. The church tower was added in 1824. Now the church is a Grade II listed building with British Heritage

St Michael's Church, first mentioned in 1185 and with a tower described by Pevsner as 'modest and pretty'.
What catches your eye when approaching the church is the large WELCOME sign above the door. You will also get a warm welcome smile from the vicar, Sue Starkey, who came to Willington Ten years ago through God's calling.
A church is not just a building, rather a group of people in any one community. We have a small church but a quaint church.

Church Activities

Coffee Morning - First Saturday every month we hold a coffee morning in the Village Hall. Here we welcome anyone to join us for a drink and a chat. There are various stalls selling different crafts & cakes for you to enjoy, also a occasional raffle. Accompanied children are welcome to come along too and take part in activities between 10am and 12noon.

Church Book Shelf

The church currently has a ‘Book Shelf’, With the decline in libraries, the church funding comes with a requirement that we provide something of a public access to books. These second hand books can be purchased with a donation to the church funding or swopped to allow access to a wider range of books.

The Church is changing

We currently have plans to include a toilet within the church. With this we are planning to take Click to Download Plans
out the pews in the North transept and replace this area with informal seating and tables. Around the walls we will install cupboards and a serving hatch into a better kitchen area. This area will be open to other groups wishing to meet in the church – Do you have any ideas for new meeting spot?

Where are we now (September 2015)?

We have now received the final Faculty Certificate from the Diocese of Derby which gives us permission to commence the work on Installing the Toilet Facility, upgrading the kitchen and removing pews in the North Transept to make a flexible seating area.
We are also delighted to have been allocated two grants totaling £20,000
Thanks to you all for supporting our fundraising events and for generous donations given we now have £10,920 in our Church Building Fund.
This means with the two grants we have about half the money required. We are hoping we get some more grants to cover the rest. The total cost of the project will be about £44,600.00

Thanks again to everyone who supports us.
